Ready for a fun fact about eau de parfum? The word 'perfume' actually derives from the Latin 'per fumare.' This means 'through smoke.' Perhaps unsurprising then, that some people can find the subject a little foggy. So many fancy terms for smellies! Are they all just different words for the same thing? Well actually, no. The ratio of oil to alcohol and water in each fragrance determines what it is classed as. The higher the concentration of oil, the longer your scent will last, and the less you should need to use. Here's a handy guide to clue you up on what's what.
A fragrance can help to build a deeper emotional connection with people. Our sense of smell is many times more sensitive than our vision, and is able to detect over a trillion unique scents. The olfactory (or smell centre of the brain) is directly connected to the limbic system, which is sometimes called the “emotional brain.” Therefore a unique scent equals a powerful emotional connection. And knowing how to choose a fragrance that is your perfect match gives you a head start in creating more of those connections.
My own mother used to wear the same perfume whenever she was going out for the evening. Now every time I smell it I remember her hugging me before she left.
Choosing a fragranceSo choosing the perfect perfume or aftershave is very important, but what is the best way to go about this, with so many perfumes on the market?Whilst the tester cards that are sometimes provided in department stores can be useful, it is vital to note that each scent will smell different once sprayed onto your skin, as your own natural scent will combine with the perfume or aftershave. The best way to start out is by using the cards to narrow down what kind of scent you prefer, be it floral, oriental, fresh or woody.Once you have narrowed your choices down, spray one scent onto each wrist. Give the fragrance chance to settle, and then take in the scent. The first thing you smell is the top note, which is the initial, lighter fragrance. This will last from 15 minutes to two hours. After this, you will notice the medium note of the fragrance (the heart notes), which is the main element. It develops once the top note clears, and can last between 3 and 5 hours after being sprayed. The last scent to develop is the base note. These are the bolder notes of the scent, which become noticeable later in the day. These are the notes that last between 5 and 10 hours.
Take your time when buying a fragranceBetween smelling each new fragrance, you should ideally refresh your palate with something strong, like coffee or tea. Otherwise, all the scents can overpower your nose until you can no longer tell the true aroma. Don’t buy on impulse. Once you have sprayed it onto your skin, give the fragrance chance to settle, ideally over several hours, so that you get a chance to smell all the notes. See how they compliment your own natural body odour. Remember to choose a fragrance that feels right for you - not what the glitzy adverts are pushing! And of course, once you have decided on your fragrance, why not visit the House of Astley website to order and get great savings on classic womens fragrances and mens aftershaves.
